A $25 million wood pellet plant will be built in the George County industrial park, Gulf Coast Renewable Energy told the county Board of Supervisors on Monday.

The plant will employ 30 full-time workers and provide an additional 100 to 120 indirect jobs, said Ken Flanagan, community development director for the county.

Flanagan said the county has been working to recruit the company over the last year, and the site was an “ideal spot” for their business being directly located on the Mississippi Export Railroad property and five minutes away from a four-lane highway that will provide convenient transportation segways for its products.

The South Mississippi area also serves as a substantial “wood basket” for available soft wood such as pine trees.

Gulf Coast Renewable Energy officials told the board they hope to be in production by 2014.
