A local development’s efforts to clear some trees as part of a fire mitigation program directed by the Florida Division of Forestry has some residents hopping mad.

And while the work has been stopped for now by the St. Johns County Environmental Division, it’s unclear whether it will continue.

St. Augustine Shores resident Sue Chitwood went out of town for a few days last week, and when she returned, she was surprised to see a large area of trees removed along Shores Boulevard.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It was almost a complete clear cut of several acres of trees. They left only a handful. Then I saw the logging trucks, hauling away all these trees. I was shocked.”

Jerry Zinn, president of St. Augustine Shores Service Corporation’s board of directors, said Tuesday that the tree removal is part of the development’s fire mitigation program, and said that the work is being coordinated by the Florida Division of Forestry.
