State firefighters are continuing to battle a wildfire today in Hawkins County that has consumed about 2,000 acres on Short Mountain near Rogersville. The blaze is one of six different fire calls answered Monday in Hawkins, Scott, Grainger, Hancock, Campbell and Knox counties.

Nathan Waters, assistant district forester for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Forestry Division, says conditions for potentially dangerous fire weather are high and will remain for the next few days.

The low humidity, no rain and anticipated winds associated with an approaching front are fueling conditions.

The largest of the wildfires on Monday was in Hawkins County where the Emergency Management Agency and fire departments today are working fire containment, protecting structures and evaluating evacuation possibilities, Waters said in a news release.

Two additional fires near the Short Mountain blaze were reported in Hawkins and Grainger County. All three fires are suspected arson.
