Greensville County will soon have a new company, Greensville Biomass, LLC. CHP Energy Engineering is developing a wood fueled (biomass) combined heat and power project that will supply electricity and steam to Boar’s Head. Excess electricity produced will either be wheeled to the Boar’s Head Petersburg facility or sold to Dominion Virginia Power or Old Dominion Electrical Cooperative.

CHP specializes in the development, engineering, operation and maintenance of combined heat and power plants, particularly those fueled with “green” alternative fuels. Total estimated project capital cost is almost $10.42 million.

The new industry will provide Boar’s Head with a very environmentally friendly fuel source that they intend to use in marketing their deli products. The project also fits into their near term expansion plans for the Jarratt facility. The company is currently looking forward to expansion of the facility due to the continued demand and growth of their customer base. They are environmentally sensitive and would like to be able to claim that their meats were processed with “green” energy, both electrical and thermal.

Wood fuel will be supplied by a single source, that being Rayonier, which utilizes forest fiber to produce everything from filters and LCD screens to pharmaceutical and fluff pulp, which is used in disposable diapers and other absorbent projects.
